Where to Give Birth in Vancouver
In Vancouver, there are two main hospitals for expectant mothers: BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre and St. Paul’s Hospital’s Maternity Centre. Both hospitals offer great care and have many services to help parents and their babies. It’s important to know that where you live can affect where you have your baby, even if it’s not your first choice.
BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre is in the South Cambie area on Oak Street at West 32 Avenue. If you live in Vancouver, you can see a Family Doctor at BC Women’s Hospital for prenatal care. If you live outside the city, you must be a long-term patient of a doctor or midwife who practices at BC Women’s or have had a baby there before.
St. Paul’s Hospital Pregnancy, Birthing and Newborn Centre is in Downtown Vancouver on Burrard Street at Comox Street. St. Paul’s caters to pregnant people from across the Lower Mainland. They cater to both low and high risk pregnancies.
Please note that births do not typically happen at Vancouver General Hospital.
Visit HealthLink BC‘s website to learn more about where to have your baby. They provide some general information, including options for home birth.
